Vincent Deighan, better known by the pen name Frank Quitely, is a Scottish comic book artist. He is best known for his frequent collaborations with Grant Morrison on titles such as New X-Men, We3, All-Star Superman, and Batman and Robin, as well as his work with Mark Millar on The Authority and Jupiter's Legacy.
Morrison's criticism of the dark and somber superhero trend in the 1990s is layered into the subtext of the story
Morrison refers to this series along with The Invisibles and The Filth as a "hypersigil" trilogy, a term coined by Morrison that refers to a work of art with its own willpower to persist in delivering its meaning
In 2000, the Charles Atlas corporation filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against DC Comics for the portrayal of Flex Mentallo being a parody of the real-life Italian bodybuilder
The lawsuit was eventually dismissed but series was out-of-print for over a decade and commanded a considerable amount on the secondary market
Flex Mentallo: Man of Muscle Mystery has since been published in a hardcover deluxe edition collection and a trade paperback
